Old Geehi Hut
2nd - 4th October 2004

During the weekend of 2 – 4 October 2004 our party joined with the Range Rover Club to finish the work done on Old Geehi Hut after the big fires. Our work consisted of painting the timber work which had been replaced inside and out. The colour scheme is great! Heritage green outside on the windows and door with Antique White on the inside and under the eaves. All this needed to be completed before the reopenning on Sunday afternoon so visitors and the families of the original builders could visit the finished huts. The task apeared to be simple enough, roll the paint onto the ceiling and cut in the edges, while others painted the outside with brushes. Some of us early ?? started to paint the edges and decided that rollers would not be of much value as the ceiling was special boards with grooves so brushes were employed to do the whole job.

Saturday morning saw the two clubs paint the first coat of green on the outside and some of the inside which meant a second coat could be started late in the afternoon to dry overnight allowing the Range Rover crew assemble the table and chairs that were burnt during the fire. Sunday morning was a sterling effort by all those attending the trip as the second coat and the furniture was all finished before the opening. The quality of the finished hut was praised by all concerned when the official openning was convened and members of the NPWS and local families and guests visited. During lunch and the opening several of our club members met and enjoyed the company of the original builders and or labourers, with stories and yarns exchanged. A very special weekend had by all
