CLEAN UP STOCKTON BEACH
22 Oct 2006

Written by Fred Mayer.

Ignoring blusterous southerly winds and rain squalls, eight car loads of enthusiasts, representing the our LROC, presented at Stockton Beach to see RED FOR RUBBISH. It was the annual CLEAN UP STOCKTON BEACH DAY.

After registration, collection of rubbish bags, gloves and sample bags, which included red shirts and hats, the team aired down and headed east over the sand dunes. Fred had dressed for the day- red socks, hat, shirt and (you guessed it)- red jocks!

The convoy formed up at the beach, but where was Matt? We put a call out over the radio and found he was stuck behind other vehicles- “be there soon.” We watched the passing scene and checked out the wildlife, but no sign of Matt. On the radio again, “Have you got a compass, Matt?” Reply, “I know where east is.” And soon Matt appeared from the north, dogs hanging out from the side of the ute canopy, woofing with joy. What a sight! Did you swing the compass Matt?

We headed south swapping between the coast and inland tracks for a bit of variety until we reached the wreck. Then we headed inland to begin the business of the day---RUBBISH.

What an amazing collection of junk! How can people take this stuff to the beach and dump it there?
We collected- mattresses, exercise bike, trolley, bottles, all sorts of plastic items, cans. Peter VW estimated there was a good ton and a half of rubbish collected. This was packed into provided bags and deposited above high water mark for later collection by the rangers.

The Clean Up is a big community effort. We met people from other four wheel drive clubs and community groups. It was a fun day, with a serious agenda and we left the beach with our halos shining.

The Driver Training Committee invites you to join in the Clean Up next year on the Sunday after school resumes for last term.
